Scott Brems grew up in South Jordan, Utah and later Phoenix, Arizona. An early appreciation for the landscape was fostered by scouting and family campouts in the mountains of Utah and Wyoming. Annual trips to the Lyman ranch in Boulder were particularly influential as he explored the sandstone formations of southern Utah on horseback. Later Scott was exposed to the landscape of the Sonoran desert when he moved with his family to Arizona.
Scott began studying art in High School. He filled available electives with extra art classes, which led to an art scholarship to the University of Arizona and later Arizona State University, but his most valuable art education began when he enrolled at the Scottsdale Artists’ School. “I was exposed to a whole new kind of art and artists. I was introduced to plein air and the value of painting from life. The instructors were very generous with their knowledge.” Scott studied with artists including Mark Daily, Matt Smith, Ray Roberts, Robert Lemler and T. Allen Lawson.
“Most of my childhood was spent in the outdoors working and playing. Because of this, I feel deeply connected with the landscape. Compelled to expression, I enjoy getting out and working en plein air. It’s the best way to capture the essence of a subject. I also value time spent in the studio refining the reference material I've collected into works that go beyond documenting nature. A successful landscape painting evokes the senses, connecting the viewer, artist and place.”
He received the Best of Show Award at the Arizona Plein Air Painters Show in 2011, an Honorarium award at the 2005 Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum’s Plein Air show and a purchase award at the Scottsdale Artists’ School. He was featured in Southwest Art’s 21 Under 31 article in 2001 and American Art Collector's November 2011 issue.
Today Scott lives in Phoenix with his Wife, Daughter and two dogs.
